Logic Used
This calculator uses a Hybrid Weighted Split.
- The value of specific amenities (like private bathrooms) is subtracted from the total rent.
- The remaining "base rent" is divided proportionally based on the square footage of each person's private space.
- The amenity value is then added back to the person who has it.
Note: Common areas are assumed to be shared equally and are factored into the base proportional split.
How to Split Rent Fairly
Splitting rent equally is rarely "fair." If one person has a walk-in closet and a private ensuite bath while the other has a smaller room and shares a hallway bathroom, the costs should reflect that.
Common Methods for Splitting Rent
- Square Footage Method: Calculate the rent per square foot of the entire apartment, then apply that to the private bedrooms. Common area costs are shared equally.
- Perk-Based Adjustments: Start with an even split and add/subtract fixed amounts for specific amenities like balconies, parking spots, or closets.
- The Auction Method: Roommates bid on the "better" room until a price is reached where everyone is satisfied with the outcome.
